Clean Label Checker is a Manifest V3 Firefox extension from Pure Croft SASU in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. It scans the ingredient block on the page you already have open and highlights common fillers, excipients, sweeteners, colours, preservatives and E-numbers, with short neutral descriptions in English and French.

It exists as a shopping-time reading aid rather than a barcode scanner app or a cloud nutrition database. Matching runs entirely in the browser. The publisher states there are no network requests, no accounts and no telemetry.

The concrete differentiator for privacy-minded buyers is the local-only architecture plus a public MIT source tree, while the publisher remains a French SASU whose primary business is food supplements rather than browser software.

Shortlist when you want a free, French-published, local-only Firefox aid for spotting fillers and E-numbers on shop pages and you can accept a finite on-device dictionary. Skip when you need barcode scanning, product scores, enterprise browser management or audited cloud processing. Consider a dedicated nutrition/barcode app (for example Yuka) or manual registry lookup instead for those jobs.

Key capabilities

By default the content script only scans text near headings such as Ingredients, Ingrédients, Composition, Excipients or Supplement Facts. A popup option switches to whole visible page mode when a shop formats labels differently.

Ships roughly 65 ingredient families with English and French names, 80+ mapped E-numbers, and fallback labelling for other E100-E1599 codes by EU numbering group (colour, preservative, thickener, and so on).

Vendor documentation states the extension never contacts a server. Matching and highlights stay on the page; on/off state, scan mode and per-site allowlist live in browser storage.local only.

The toolbar popup lists distinct flagged ingredients with category, E-numbers, matched wording and a short neutral explanation. Clicking an item scrolls to occurrences; hover shows the explanation on the highlight.

Source is published on GitHub under MIT with Firefox and Chrome build scripts. The AMO package declares data_collection_permissions none and targets Firefox 140+.

Best fit when

  • Privacy-conscious shoppers who want in-page additive/E-number highlights without an account
  • Readers switching between English and French ingredient synonyms on EU shop sites
  • Teams evaluating browser extensions where "no outbound requests" is a hard requirement
  • Users willing to install from Firefox Add-ons and accept a fixed local dictionary

Poor fit when

  • Buyers needing barcode scan, Nutri-Score-style rankings or Open Food Facts sync
  • Food manufacturers needing ingredient compliance SaaS with APIs and audit trails
  • Environments that only allow Chrome Web Store distribution (AMO is the public store path found)
  • Anyone expecting medical or "safe to eat" judgements from the highlights

Consider instead when

  • When: You need barcode scanning and product-level nutrition or additive scores

Consider: Consumer apps such as Yuka (not in this catalog) or Open Food Facts based tools

Those products pull cloud databases; different privacy and accuracy tradeoffs.

  • When: You only need occasional E-number lookups without installing an extension

Consider: Official EU additive materials or a general search engine

Slower on long labels; leaves the shopping page.

Considerations & known limitations

  • MediumNo independent audit of no-network claim

Local-only behaviour is asserted in PRIVACY.md and visible in the open source tree, but there is no public third-party audit. Organisations with strict extension review should review the XPI themselves.

  • MediumFinite text dictionary and false prompts

Coverage is a built-in list plus generic E-number groups. Mentions inside an ingredients block (including "free from X") can still highlight. Image and iframe labels are missed.

  • LowPublisher is primarily an e-commerce supplement brand

Pure Croft SASU's core business is selling mushroom extracts. Extension maintenance cadence and roadmap may follow a small side-project model rather than a dedicated security-software vendor.

  • LowAMO license metadata mismatch

GitHub LICENSE is MIT; the AMO current version license field showed All Rights Reserved at research time. Confirm before relying on store metadata alone.

Open questions for due diligence

  • Will Pure Croft align the Firefox Add-ons license metadata with the MIT LICENSE file?
  • Is a Chrome Web Store listing planned, or will Chromium users remain on sideload builds?
  • Will the ingredient dictionary publish versioned changelogs or external references for each entry?

Frequently Asked Questions

According to PRIVACY.md and the README, no. The extension makes no network requests; ingredient matching runs in the content script on the current page, and settings stay in local extension storage. There is no account. This is a vendor claim backed by the published source tree, not an independent audit.

No. It is a consumer reading aid with a finite built-in list plus generic E-number group labels. It does not replace regulatory databases, lab analysis or full label review. Image-rendered lists and cross-origin iframes are out of scope.

PURE CROFT SASU, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France (SIREN 100 562 107, RCS Nanterre), per the purecroft.fr mentions légales and the official French company search API. Support contact listed on AMO and GitHub is inquiries@purecroft.fr.

Yes for testing. The repository documents temporary install via about:debugging and unpacked Chrome/Edge/Brave sideload from the dist zips. Production Firefox users should prefer the public AMO listing for signed updates.

Those apps typically identify a packaged product and pull a cloud database or score. Clean Label Checker only highlights strings already visible in the browser tab and does not claim health scores or product rankings.
