Riff

Estonian desktop Chrome extension that drafts social replies, posts, and DMs on-device with Gemini Nano. No account, no API key, no product servers.

Teilweise in der EU gehostet

Riff is a free desktop Chrome extension from Zima Media OÜ in Tallinn that drafts social replies, posts, and messages with Gemini Nano, the on-device model built into Chrome. You paste a rough point (or leave it empty in a DM), tune dials for pitch and tone, then insert the draft into the site's own box. You always press Reply, Comment, Post, or Send yourself.

It exists for people who want AI writing help on X, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram without creating an account, pasting an API key, or sending post text to a vendor server. The same panel also drafts LinkedIn, Messenger, Instagram, and X Chat DMs, plus Slack and Microsoft Teams conversations in Chrome (not the desktop apps).

The concrete differentiator is the data path: Riff's privacy policy and help docs state the extension has no product servers, stores Voice, library, and history in Chrome storage on the computer, and runs inference through Chrome's on-device Prompt API.

Shortlist when you want on-device AI drafts for social replies, posts, and browser DMs from an Estonian publisher and you can run Gemini Nano in desktop Chrome. Skip when you need auto-publishing, mobile apps, multi-seat admin, or a signed cloud DPA. Consider Fireply AI for automated X replies, or ZoomSphere for multi-network scheduling.

Key capabilities

Riff reads the post (and quoted or parent context) in the tab, takes your rough point, and streams a reply sized to that site via Gemini Nano on the computer. Insert fills the site's reply or comment box; you press send. Desktop Chrome only.

Click into a new post box and the panel switches to Post mode: drop notes, ask for three hooks, rework with chips (shorter, stronger hook, scannable), and keep versions until Clear. Supports LinkedIn posts, X posts or threads, Facebook posts, and Instagram captions (caption flow marked beta on the help site).

Drafts LinkedIn Messaging, facebook.com Messenger, Instagram Direct, X Chat, plus Slack and Microsoft Teams in Chrome. Point text is optional in DMs. Vendor docs state it will not accept a time, price, or yes/no for you, and Insert never presses Send.

Tone and length follow the active tab (for example X character counting with links as 23 characters, LinkedIn up to 3,000). Voice and brand voices, a Never-say list, and checks against your last 60 replies or posts aim to keep drafts from repeating you. Settings stay in Chrome storage on that machine.

Privacy policy and Chrome Web Store listing state Riff has no extension servers, analytics, or remote code loading for the product itself. Commercial model is free with no subscription. You still depend on Google's on-device Gemini Nano download inside Chrome.

Best fit when

  • Creators and founders who draft X/LinkedIn/Facebook/Instagram replies and posts in desktop Chrome and want the text to stay local
  • People who answer LinkedIn, Messenger, Instagram, X Chat, Slack web, or Teams web threads and need a draft without the tool accepting times or prices
  • Buyers whose filter is no vendor account and no API key for a social writing assistant
  • EU-entity preference with a published Estonian OÜ on the privacy page and business register

Poor fit when

  • Teams that need scheduling, content calendars, approvals, or analytics across networks
  • Users on mobile, Chromebook non-Plus hardware that cannot load Gemini Nano, or machines below the RAM/GPU/disk bar
  • Buyers who want hands-off X automation via contributor access (see Fireply AI) rather than manual Insert and Send
  • Procurement processes that require a cloud AI DPA, SSO, and named product subprocessors for prompt text

Consider instead when

  • When: You want automated X reply volume through official contributor access rather than local drafts you send yourself

    Consider: Fireply AI

Lithuanian SaaS; cloud LLM path, different trust model

  • When: You need multi-network publishing calendars, approvals, and agency workflows

    Consider: ZoomSphere

Czech social media management suite; not an on-device writer

  • When: You mainly want general writing assistance outside social reply boxes

    Consider: Grammarly

US incumbent writing assistant; cloud processing, broad surface beyond social

No known US parent for Zima Media OÜ. Product content path is on-device per vendor docs. Partial EU-hosted roll-up because the public site uses Cloudflare and GA, and the AI model stack is Google Chrome. Indicative only, not legal advice.

Considerations & known limitations

  • HighStrict Chrome / Gemini Nano hardware bar

Without Chrome 138+, enough free disk, and GPU/RAM thresholds, the extension cannot run. This excludes many managed laptops and all mobile users.

  • MediumDepends on Google on-device AI in Chrome

Riff does not ship its own model. Availability, languages, and future Prompt API behaviour follow Chrome/Gemini Nano. Privacy policy points to Google's privacy terms for the model.

  • MediumOn-device claims are first-party only

No public independent audit of extension network behaviour was found. Security teams may want to inspect the unpacked extension or wait for third-party review.

  • LowMarketing site uses Cloudflare and Google Analytics

Website visitors (not extension drafts) hit US-group CDN/analytics. Consent banner applies in EEA/UK/CH for GA.

  • LowNo auto-publish or scheduling

By design Riff never presses send. Teams needing automation volume must use another product.

Open questions for due diligence

  • Will Zima Media publish a third-party review of the extension's network behaviour to corroborate the no-server claim?
  • Is there any telemetry or update channel beyond the Chrome Web Store package that is not described on the privacy page?
  • For organisations locking Chrome AI features, what is the supported path when Gemini Nano is disabled by policy?

Häufig gestellte Fragen

According to Riff's privacy policy and on-device help page, the extension has no product servers and does not send post text, messages, drafts, or Voice data to Zima Media or other parties. Inference uses Chrome's on-device Gemini Nano Prompt API. The separate marketing site may use Cloudflare and, with consent in the EEA/UK/Switzerland, Google Analytics; that covers website traffic, not extension content. There is no public third-party audit of the extension's network calls yet.

Vendor requirements: desktop Chrome 138 or newer on Windows 10/11, macOS 13+, Linux, or Chromebook Plus; about 22 GB free on the Chrome profile drive; a GPU with more than 4 GB VRAM or 16 GB RAM with four or more CPU cores; and an unmetered connection for the one-time model download. It does not run on phones, tablets, or Slack/Teams desktop apps.

No. Riff only fills the reply, comment, message, or post box. Publishing, scheduling, analytics, and approval workflows are out of scope. For multi-network calendars, evaluate a tool such as ZoomSphere instead.

Fireply AI (Lithuania) automates X replies through official contributor access and cloud LLM generation. Riff stays in your Chrome profile, drafts on-device, and never posts for you. Pick Fireply when you want hands-off X volume; pick Riff when local drafting and manual send are the constraint.

No productized DPA, SSO, or fleet admin console showed up in public docs. Riff is positioned as a free individual Chrome extension with no account. Procurement teams that need a signed DPA and subprocessors list for a cloud AI writer will not find that package here, because the vendor claims there is no product backend processing personal data.
